Julien Bonnafé is a PhD candidate in Biomechanics at the Laboratoire de Mécanique des Solides (LMS), conducting a CIFRE thesis in partnership with EssilorLuxottica International and Inria. His research focuses on the biomechanical modeling of extraocular muscles to better understand the tissue deformations associated with eye movement and myopia development.

Thesis Overview

Title: Biomechanical modeling of extra ocular muscles for the movement of an eye model applied to optics and myopia evolution.

Julien’s project investigates the ocular tissue deformations related to eye movements and the development of myopia during childhood. By treating the eye and its surrounding muscles as a complex mechanical system, his work aims to bridge the gap between muscular contraction and long-term ocular growth.

His main research objectives include:

  • Extraocular Muscle Simulation: Simulating the contraction of extraocular muscles to accurately assess the resulting strains and stresses near the visual center of the eye.
  • Patient-Specific Modeling: Developing highly accurate, patient-specific Finite Element (FE) models derived directly from Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging.
  • Myopia Evolution: Characterizing the influence of these repeated movements and mechanical stresses using advanced growth and remodeling models to predict myopia progression.

Key topics: Finite Element Method Eye Movements Growth and Remodeling Models
